Good News for Nepal’s Hydropower Sector: Panchakanya Mai Hydropower Limited Restores Power After Flood Damage
Great news for Nepal’s energy sector! Panchakanya Mai Hydropower Limited has announced the successful resumption of power generation from both of its hydropower projects in Ilam district. This follows a temporary disruption caused by severe floods and landslides resulting from heavy rainfall on Ashwin 17 and 18, 2082 (according to the Nepali calendar).
The company reported that the Mai River flood inflicted considerable damage to the Headworks and civil structures of the Upper Mai Hydropower Project (9.98 MW). The Mai C Hydropower Project (5.1 MW) also suffered damage to its powerhouse and Headworks. Consequently, both power plants were forced to cease electricity generation starting at 9:45 PM on Ashwin 18.
However, Panchakanya Mai Hydropower worked diligently to address the situation. Following necessary repairs and comprehensive maintenance, the Mai C Hydropower Project (5.1 MW) was back in operation on Ashwin 23 at 9:35 AM. The larger Upper Mai Hydropower Project (9.98 MW) followed suit, resuming operations on Ashwin 26 at 7:50 PM.
The company has officially confirmed that electricity generation from both hydropower plants is now fully restored, contributing significantly to Nepal’s power supply. This swift recovery highlights the resilience of Nepal’s infrastructure and the dedication of companies like Panchakanya Mai Hydropower Limited to ensuring a stable and reliable power grid. This is positive news for renewable energy in Nepal and supports the country’s efforts towards sustainable development.
