Hydropower Projects in Nepal Shut Down Due to Severe Flooding

The Himal Dolakha Hydropower Company Ltd. has announced a complete shutdown of two of its key hydropower facilities in Nepal. The Mai Khola Small Hydropower Project (4.5 MW) and the Mai Small Cascade Hydropower Project (8 MW) have ceased operations due to significant damage caused by relentless rainfall and subsequent flooding. This represents a temporary setback for renewable energy production in the region.

According to company statements, the intense rainfall experienced on October 4, 2025 (Ashwin 18, 2082), resulted in widespread destruction of critical infrastructure at both hydropower plants. The continuing high water levels are preventing engineers from conducting a thorough damage assessment and determining the full extent of the impact on these vital energy assets. This also prevents an accurate valuation of the losses.

The Himal Dolakha Hydropower Company emphasized that both hydroelectric projects are currently non-operational due to these unforeseen and uncontrollable environmental conditions. This information has been disclosed in accordance with Securities Listing Regulations, ensuring transparency and accountability. The company has assured stakeholders that further details concerning the damage and subsequent restoration plans will be communicated as soon as the floodwaters recede and a comprehensive evaluation can be completed. The focus is now on disaster recovery and restoring power generation as quickly and safely as possible. The impact of this disruption on the local power grid is being assessed.
