Hydropower Project Damaged by Nepal Floods

The Lower Jogmai Khola Hydropower Project, a 6.2 MW facility operated by Asian Hydropower Ltd., has suffered significant damage due to recent landslides and flooding in Ilam district, Nepal. The company issued a statement indicating that continuous rainfall, consistent with warnings from the Government of Nepal and other relevant authorities, has impacted the region since October 4th, 2025 (18th Ashwin 2082 BS). The heavy rainfall has already caused considerable human and material losses across the affected areas.

Around 2–3 AM on October 5th, 2025 (19th Ashwin 2082 BS), the hydropower project sustained substantial damage to its physical infrastructure due to unexpected landslides and subsequent flooding. The company reports that river flooding has yet to fully subside, making a complete damage assessment impossible at this time. As a result of the extensive damage, electricity generation from the Lower Jogmai Khola Hydropower Project has been completely suspended. The impact of the Nepal floods on hydropower infrastructure highlights the vulnerability of such projects to extreme weather events. Asian Hydropower Ltd. is currently working to assess the full extent of the damage and plan for necessary repairs once conditions allow. This incident underscores the importance of robust infrastructure planning and disaster preparedness in regions prone to monsoon-related disasters. The power outage resulting from the damage will likely impact the local community.
