Impact of Recent Flooding on Sanvi Energy’s Hydropower Projects in Nepal
The recent heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions in Nepal have taken a toll, including the Ilam district and surrounding areas. Sanvi Energy Ltd. has announced significant disruptions to its hydropower generation capabilities due to landslides and flooding.
As predicted by the Government of Nepal and other relevant agencies, continuous rainfall, starting around October 4th and 5th, 2025 (Ashwin 18th and 19th, 2082 BS), has caused substantial damage across the region. Tragically, these natural disasters have resulted in both human and material losses.
On October 5th, 2025, early in the morning, unexpected landslides and subsequent flooding severely impacted the infrastructure of two key power plants owned and operated by Sanvi Energy Ltd. The affected facilities are the Jogmai Khola Small Hydropower Project (7.6 MW) and the Jogmai Cascade Hydropower Project (5.2 MW).
Due to the ongoing floodwaters, a complete and thorough assessment of the damages is still underway. For the time being, electricity generation from both hydropower projects has been completely halted. This power outage highlights the vulnerability of renewable energy infrastructure to climate change and the importance of disaster preparedness in the energy sector. Sanvi Energy Ltd. is committed to restoring power supply as soon as possible, prioritizing safety and comprehensive damage assessment. The incident underscores the need for resilient infrastructure development in flood-prone areas.
