Hydropower Project Suspended After Heavy Rainfall and Landslides
The Puwa 2 Hydropower Project (4.96 MW), operated by People’s Power Limited, has been temporarily shut down due to severe weather conditions. Recent heavy rainfall has led to floods and landslides, causing significant damage to the project’s headworks area. This disruption has forced the company to suspend electricity production.
The company reports that the persistently high water levels in the Puwa Khola are currently preventing a comprehensive damage assessment. Without being able to accurately assess the situation, People’s Power Limited cannot begin restoration efforts yet. The project is currently non-operational, resulting in a complete halt to power generation.
People’s Power Limited has issued a statement reassuring stakeholders that restoration work will begin as soon as the weather stabilizes and a full assessment of the damage can be completed. The company has pledged to provide further updates regarding the extent of the damage and the timeline for resuming electricity generation in due course. This hydropower facility provides important power to the community and the team is working hard to restore operations soon. Many areas of Nepal are seeing increased impact from climate change and extreme weather making renewable energy sources vulnerable.
