Hydropower Plant Suspends Operations Due to Flood Damage
Heavy rains and resulting flooding have forced a temporary shutdown of the Supermai Hydropower Project. The 7.8-megawatt hydropower plant, owned and operated by Supermai Hydropower Limited, has sustained damage due to recent extreme weather conditions in the Mai River region.
Continuous rainfall, coupled with devastating flooding and landslides, impacted the project’s critical infrastructure. The intense weather event, which occurred on October 4, 2025 (Ashwin 18, 2082), caused significant damage, leading to a complete cessation of electricity production around 10:45 PM. The forced power outage highlights the vulnerability of renewable energy infrastructure to the increasing impacts of climate change.
Supermai Hydropower Limited has confirmed that repair and restoration efforts are currently in progress. The company is committed to restoring power generation capabilities as swiftly as possible. They have assured stakeholders that the plant will resume operations once the necessary maintenance is completed. Further updates will be provided to relevant authorities and stakeholders as the situation evolves and the plant prepares to go back online with a reliable power supply. The incident underscores the importance of robust disaster preparedness and resilience in the hydropower industry to ensure consistent energy production.
